NEW DELHI: Children studying in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's primary schools would soon have a new replacement to their identity cards in the form of a ‘smart card'. Providing all details including name, addresses, health status and blood group of the student, the card will also help them to avail of benefits under various multi-purpose schemes, the MCD said. MCD Education Committee chairman Mahinder Nagpal stated that the civic agency was planning to issue smart cards to about 10 lakh children studying in its schools. “The Education Department is considering the proposal in keeping with the need of the hour. We first took the initiative to issue identity cards to children studying in our schools. However, the validity of the identity cards is only for one year and hence new identity cards have to be issued every year leading to additional financial burden on the department. Therefore, the department is considering the proposal to issue smart cards,” he added. These smart cards would be issued for lifetime and only name of the class, year and roll number need to be changed every year in the data through the computer software. Mr. Nagpal said: “This innovative step to issue smart cards to MCD students would prove to be not only efficient and purposeful but also prevent the Education Department from additional financial burden incurred every year by issuing new identity cards to students.”
