VISAKHAPATNAM: A top leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) Amit Bagchi has undergone surgery for hernia and hydrocele at the King George Hospital here last week and is recovering, the court of the Additional Junior Civil Judge of the Narsipatnam S. Siva Sankara Reddy was informed by the prosecution on Monday. Assistant Public Prosecutor M. Adinarayana informed the court that the Maoist leader could not be produced as he was recouping from the surgery at the KGH. The police produced Maoist party's politburo member B. Prasad Singh and another top leader Chedda Bhushanam, who were under judicial custody at the Central Jail here, before the Judge, who is in-charge of the Chintapalli First Class Judicial Magistrate's court, in connection with the Gunukurayi encounter case. The proceedings were adjourned to June 13. The Judge heard arguments submitted by the APP regarding two PT warrants issued against Mr. Chedda Bhushanam in connection with cases filed against him in the Natavaram and A. Annavaram police stations. Mr. Bagchi, who is a member of Maoist party's politburo and also its central military commission was suffering with severe hernia since he was detained at the Ranch and Charlapalli prisons before shifted to Visakhapatnam jail. A petition was submitted by his advocates to the District Review Committee for under-trial and remand prisoners seeking medical aid for him, as he would face certain death if not provided the same on May 16. The surgery was performed on last Thursday at the KGH and he is in a stable condition, Mr. Bagchi's advocate P. Appa Rao said.
