GUNTUR: Students of Sibar Dental College and other educational institutions took out a rally from the Hindu College to DMHO office here on Tuesday to mark the World No Tobacco Day. Participating as the chief guest in a program held at the DMHO office, District Collector V.N. Vishnu called for concerted effort to reduce the consumption of tobacco products. Spreading awareness is the key to curbing the menace, he observed.District Medical and Health Officer M. Gopi Naik said passive smokers were equally at risk as the consumers of tobacco. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was widely prevalent among the employees of cigarette manufacturers.Efforts are being made to bring down the consumption of tobacco as per the provisions of Control of Tobacco Products Act, 2008.There was an act prior to that enacted in 1975 wherein various powers were conferred on the officials concerned. Additional Joint Collector K. Yakub Naik, Additional DMHO Uma Sudheer, Prof. Jagannadha Rao of Department of Social and Preventive Medicine of Guntur Medical College and others were present.
