Balakrushna Dash Samman for Nirmala Mishra

BHUBANESWAR: Popular playback singer of yesteryears, Nirmala Mishra has been chosen for the Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Dash Samman. The honour has been instituted after he name of the late legendary singer-composer Balakrushna Das by the Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Dash Foundation.

Foundation secretary and eminent Odissi musicologist-vocalist Ramahari Das told the media that despite being a Bengali, Nirmala Mishra won hearts of the Oriya peoplewith her rendition of several unforgettable film songs. She was a household name during her days; he said and added that it was Balakrushna Dash under whose direction she sang the golden hits in memorable films like Abhinetree, Sri Lokanath, Nabajanma, Manikajodi and Amadabata. Nirmala will be honoured during the birth anniversary celebrations of Balakrushna Dash at Jayadev Bhawan here on Wednesday. The foundation will confer Saraswati Samman on three veterans on the occasion for their contribution to music – vocalist Ghanashyam Panda (Sangeet Saraswati Samman), Brundaban Jena (Geeti Saraswati Samman) and violinist Dayanidhi Behera (Badya Saraswati Samman), the foundation secretary said.
