Opening spell holds promise for State Kochi airport receives highest rainfall of 13 cm THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The southwest monsoon is evolving along ideal conditions over Kerala this time, with the opening spell that began a couple of days ago showing promise of continuing vigorously into the whole of next week. An upper air cyclonic circulation lay over southeast Arabian Sea off the State's coast on Tuesday, churning rainclouds and bringing heavy rainfall in many parts of the State. The entire region south of Kozhikode was under the rain belt. India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its bulletin for the day, said the northern limit of the monsoon flow could advance further north during the next two days. Kochi airport, with 13 cm, recorded the heaviest rainfall in the State during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Peerumedu in Idukki district received rainfall measuring 8 cm on the gauge. Numerical weather prediction models of the IMD indicated the possibility of widespread heavy rainfall over the State on most days of the week ahead. The first of the low pressure systems of the season is indicated to develop over east Arabian Sea, off the Karnataka coast by June 7. The weather could be squally, with wind speed exceeding 50 km per hour, along and off the coast of the State, the IMD said, warning seagoing fishermen.
