CHENNAI: Both TNCA first-division cricket semifinal matches witnessed recovery acts on their opening day. Globe Trotters, put in by Aruna, was on 91 for five before Y. Venugopala Rao (71 batting) and U. Sushil (69 batting) raised an unbroken stand of 132 for the sixth wicket in 51.1 overs. Trotters ended the day on 223 for five in 90 overs. In the other semfinal, several Young Stars batsmen got starts but couldn't push on until A. Aarif, batting at number seven, contributed an unbeaten 77. Aarif was involved in a 90-run sixth-wicket partnership with Wilkins Victor, which helped Young Stars to 275 for six at stumps against Grand Slam. Seamer M. Raja took three of the wickets to fall. The scores (semifinals, day one): At SRMC: Globe Trotters 223 for five in 90 overs (Y. Venugopala Rao 71 n.o., U. Sushil 69 n.o.) vs. Aruna. At Guru Nanak: Young Stars 275 for six in 90 overs (Petson Mathews 43, M. Praveen Srivatsan 40, Wilkins Victor 40, A. Aarif 77 n.o.) vs. Grand Slam . Prajesh, Keerthi in lead Prajesh and V. Keerthi of Chennai, both 5 points each, led the table in the boys' and girls' sections respectively after the fifth round in the Jawahar Engineering College's TN State under-9 chess championships, organised by the Chennai District Chess Association, here on Thursday. Following Prajesh in the boys' section were, top seed P. Iniyan, C.S. Ashwath, R. Dileep Kumar, M. Varun & V.S. Raahul at 4.5 points. Keerthi was followed by M. Tejaswi and B. Kiruthika at 4.5 points. Kumar-Ganesan duo wins The pair of C.R. Kumar and S. Ganesan won the East-West Direction with a score of 64.95 IMPS in the CBA Weekly bridge tournament here recently. Viswanathan and Sundaram duo finished first in the North-South Direction with a score of 63.64 IMPS. Other results: North-South: 2. Baskar-Raksha Mehta; 3. Boaz-Naresh Mehta. East–West: 2. Chandrasekaran-Bhaskara Rao; 3. R. A. Srinivasan-Viji Srinivasan.
