ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that the government will fill the existing vacancies of doctors in medical colleges on a contract basis. Speaking at a high-level meeting to review the health care activities in the district at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Friday, Mr. Chandy said the government would also examine the possibilities of ensuring doctors recruited on contract basis a remuneration that was on par with that of regular doctors. Steps would be initiated to bring back those doctors who had been sent to other medical college hospitals on working arrangements from the Alappuzha MCH. Pointing out that there were no takers for vacant doctor posts in the Alappuzha MCH, Mr. Chandy said discussions would be held with the Public Service Commission to see whether doctors could be recruited exclusively for the Alappuzha MCH. Temporary recruitment to the posts of paramedical and nursing assistants based on existing parameters would be discussed at a meeting to be convened by the Health Minister on Monday, the Chief Minister said. Mr. Chandy, who issued directions to District Collector P. Venugopal to examine the feasibility of a bio-gas plant to treat waste from the Alappuzha MCH, asked the Collector to investigate complaints over low wages for labourers engaged in ferrying drinking water to different places in the district headquarters. Study sought Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal, pointing out that the rising incidence of several diseases including Japanese Encephalitis and Chikungunya in the district, said a scientific study was necessary. Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, G. Sudhakaran, MLA, District Collector, and others were present.
