GULBARGA: The State Government has selected Mysore and Gulbarga to bridge the gap in development of infrastructure in the slums in the cities.

The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) has entrusted the work to prepare a detailed report on the gaps in the development of notified and non-notified slums to consultants. They have been asked to submit the cost estimates to develop the slums.

Commissioner of Gulbarga City Corporation Manoj Jain told The Hindu here on Friday that the work to assess the facilities available in the 61 slums in the city, of which 42 are notified and 19 non-notified, had been entrusted to the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, Hyderabad.

A team of officials, headed by Bhargavi Ammanamanchi, research officer at the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, visited the city a few days ago. The team, which camped in the city for four days, visited all the 61 slums and collected details about the lack of basic amenities and other infrastructure requirements.

Mr. Jain said the agency would first submit its report to the Gulbarga City Corporation. Later, the proposal would be sent to the DMA. The consultants had been asked to prepare a list of the slums. This would indicate which slums required less investment for improving the living conditions and which ones needed larger investments.

Mr. Jain said the Government proposed to take up development of the slums by providing them basic amenities and other facilities under the Centrally-assisted Rajiv Awas Yojana. The Government would accord top priority to slums that were better developed and required minimum funds for various works.

“Later, slums that require complete attention and need basic amenities such as internal roads, underground drainage system, toilets, drinking water supply scheme etc. would be tackled,” he said.

The consultants have also been asked to look into the problem of housing in slums and consider the proposal to promote vertical housing projects there to overcome the shortage of space in urban areas.
