Oral cancer patient undergoes tumour removal surgery at Apollo

NEW DELHI: Doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital here have successfully carried out a tumour removal surgery and reconstruction of the jaw of a 70-year-old patient who came in with a history of oral cancer.

“What makes this case exceptional is the fact that the patient underwent 33 sittings of radiation and 12 doses of chemotherapy before coming to the hospital in Delhi. The disease was recurring despite the ongoing treatment. The patient had undergone PEG insertion last year for proper feeding. Surgical removal of the tumour was the only option available to ensure that the patient gets a chance to lead a disease-free life,” said Indraprastha Apollo Hospital senior consultant oncology Dr. Rohit. V. Nayyar.

Active smoker

The patient, Mr. J. N. Sinha, had come from Bareilly and was an active smoker and first sought medical help for a problem with his tooth.

“In Uttar Pradesh he got his premolar removed at a local clinic but some small redness was again noticed on the jaw. He was later advised to undergo chemotherapy and radiation. But even after this the patient wasn't getting much relief,” said Dr. Nayyar.

The patient then came to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and after further investigations it was found that a surgical intervention would be required.

“Mr. Sinha underwent the surgery earlier this year and post-surgery his entire lower jaw had to be reconstructed which was taken care of by the plastic surgeon at the hospital,'' noted a release issued by the Hospital. “The patient's lower jaw was removed because of the tumour and had to be reconstructed surgically to resume normal movement.”

Mr. Sinha is now reportedly doing well after the surgery.
