‘Disappearance' of body from mortuary creates stir

Staff Reporter

Authorities could neither show us the body nor give evidence of its disposal: kin

HYDERABAD: Controversy is brewing over the alleged disappearance of the body of a 48-year-old person from the mortuary of Osmania General Hospital.

Family members of the victim, Pali K. Paul, charged that the morgue authorities could neither show them the body nor give evidence of its disposal, but the latter maintained that it was handed over to the municipal workers for cremation. A house-keeper with a private agency, Paul went to Shilparamam following a call from his office on the evening of May 6 but didn't return home.

Head injury

The next day, he was found dead with a head injury, believed to have been caused after being hit by a vehicle, near the ORR at Shamshabad. Since his identity was not known then, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police registered a case under Section 304-A (rash and negligent act resulting in death) of the IPC and shifted the body to the OGH mortuary.

As no one came forward to claim the body, the RGIA police on May 14 wrote to the morgue authorities to dispose of the body. Forensic doctors in-charge of the morgue maintained that the body was handed over to the municipal workers for cremation after two days.

Meanwhile, the victim's family members continued the searches and found that the unidentified accident victim at ORR was Paul. “The forensic doctors are misleading us by saying at one time that the body had already been disposed of and again telling us to check if it was among the ones lying in the morgue,” the victim's family members alleged.

The morgue authorities said as per records the body was handed over to the municipal workers for cremation after written request from the RGIA police.

No case was registered as the victim's family didn't approach the police.
