KHAMMAM: In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly hacked to death a 23-year-old Dalit woman to death and attempted suicide in full public view here on Friday morning.

The shocking incident comes close on the heels of gruesome killings of a married woman and a B.Ed girl student by lovelorn youth in Kothagudem and Khammam last month.

The latest incident triggered a wave of protests as activists of various student unions and women organisations staged a dharna at the district headquarters hospital demanding “instant punishment” to the accused and justice to the victim's family.

Sources said that V. Srinivas alias Srinu, 25, a sales boy in a readymade garment shop, allegedly accosted Ch. Srilatha, 23, working in another garment shop, near the municipal office here in the morning.

Srinu, who had been allegedly stalking the girl for the past few years, insisted that they should get married. When Srilatha spurned his proposal, he allegedly picked up a knife from his pocket and attacked her indiscriminately.

He allegedly slit her throat and inflicted deep wounds on her neck.

He then inflicted injuries on his own neck and caught hold of Srilatha writhing in pain on the ground, her clothes spattered with blood.

Shocked onlookers rushed the duo to the district headquarters hospital in 108 ambulance. Srilatha succumbed to the injuries on the way while Srinivas' condition was stated to be stable.

Relatives of the victim and activists owing allegiance to SFI, PDSU, and POW staged a dharna at the entrance of the hospital demanding stern punishment to the accused. “My sister had lodged a complaint against Srinivas,” said Sridevi.

“He nursed a grudge against her and killed her,” she said with tears in her eyes.

“The sadist brutally killed my elder daughter who was the breadwinner of our family,” said Eshwaramma.

Earlier, an unrepentant Srinivas told media persons that he had killed Srilatha as she refused to marry him. “I wanted to live or die with her,” he said.
