Sushmitha shines on opening day

Sushmitha bettered the National mark in the TN State sub-junior championships
15 new meet records were set

CHENNAI: R. Sushmitha of ORCA made everybody sit up and take notice with a wonderful performance in the girls' Group I 200m backstroke event (2:31.45) in the Tamil Nadu State sub-junior and junior swimming meet at the Velachery Aquatics Complex here on Friday.

In the process, Sushmitha bettered the National mark (2:33.45) set by Arti Ghorpade of Maharashtra in 2008. Fifteen new meet records — 12 in individual and three in relay — were created on the opening day.

Vijay Nichani posts win

Vijay Nichani scored a 4-0 win over Peter Paul in a Group C match of the India Pistons Snooker Open here on Friday.

Group B: Damu Menon (TNBSA) drew with Sameer Shroff (TNBSA) 2-2; Varun Kumar (MCC) bt Pranit (MCC) 4-0.
