Udhagamandalam: The seventh annual summer festival of the Nilgiris Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan got underway at the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) hall in Coonoor on Friday.

The curtain raiser was a Bharatanatyam performance by Lavanya Sankar and her students. The theme was the five senses, and how they influence humans. Incidents from the life of personalities like Swami Vivekananda and Adi Sankara were used strikingly.

The chief guest was P. Raguram Singh, joint managing director of Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation. On Saturday, the festival featured a Carnatic vocal programme by Sanjay Subramanyan and his troupe. The festival will conclude at Kotagiri on Sunday with a Carnatic music performance by Geetha Rajasehkar.
