Mechanised boats have been anchored at Pamban on Saturday. —

RAMANATHAPURAM: The mechanised boat fishermen of Rameswaram on Saturday kept away from the sea because of rough weather.

Sources said though the fisheries authorities didn't refuse to extend token, which was mandatory for them to go for fishing, no one had come forward to receive it. More than 500 boats had been anchored at jetty in Rameswaram alone. Similarly, the boats, which had berthing facilities at Pamban and Mandapam ,had also not set out to sea.

It was said that the behaviour of the sea was not at all conducive for fishing due to gusty wind. Since the resumption of fishing after a 45-day ban, the fishermen pointed out that as many as six boats of Rameswaram, Pamban had been sunk in the sea, most of them were due to rough weather. Although the crew members of the boats had managed to escape with the help of fellow fishermen, they had undergone tough time to get on to other boats.

The fishermen said the boats had suffered heavy damage as the wooden sleepers and logs were ripped apart by strong winds. They added that they would wait at least two more days to resume the fishing operation and it would be based on fishing condition.
