HYDERABAD: In contrast to the controversy in the Assembly over the presiding officer, it was smooth sailing for A. Chakrapani and Nethi Vidyasagar, who were elected unopposed as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Council respectively at a special session convened on Saturday. Pro-tem Chairman Singam Basava Punnaiah declared Dr. Chakrapani elected as the Chairman, as he was the only nominated candidate for the post. As per the tradition, both — Chief Minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy and Leader of the Opposition Dadi Veerabhadra Rao —conducted Dr .Chakrapani, elected for the second consecutive term, to the Chair and congratulated him. The Chief Minister said that it was a rare coincidence that presiding officers for both the Houses were elected on the same day. Lauding Dr. Chakrapani for earning the respect of all members cutting across party lines, he said the Upper House became synonymous for serious debate and meaningful discussions. Mr. Veerabhadra Rao said the party had decided not to field any candidate for the Chairman's post in recognition of the calibre of Dr. Chakrapani. He urged the Chairman to strive for independent status, financial freedom, for the Council and ground the proposal for a new building for the Council. Responding to the felicitations, Dr. Chakrapani urged members to rededicate themselves to the cause of the people and further enhance the reputation of the House. Later, he declared Mr. N. Vidyasagar, the only candidate nominated, as the Deputy Chairman and invited him to the Chair.
