PALAKKAD: The Coir Board will hold a seminar on the use of coir geo-textiles as part of World Environment Day celebrations on Sunday. Minister for Excise and Ports K. Babu will inaugurate the seminar at 9.30 a.m. at Hotel Indraprastha here. Coir Board chairman V.S. Vijayaraghavan will preside. M.B. Rajesh, MP, will deliver the keynote address. The Coir Board will also conduct a month-long national-level mobile phone video film competition on environmental topics. The topic of the competition is ‘Coir – nature's best friend.' Details about the contest, including its terms and conditions, will be available on the Coir Board website www.coirboard.gov.in. A jury headed by a prominent documentary film producer will evaluate the video films, said M. Kumaraswamy Pillai, Director (Marketing), Coir Board. Geo-textiles produced from 100 per cent nature-friendly coir have been found to be ideal for soil erosion-control measures, said V.S. Vijayaraghavan, chairman, Coir Board. The demand for coir geo-textiles has been steadily rising the world over for its various end uses. It is estimated that currently 3,000 million sq m of geo-textiles is used for various purposes. A major chunk of geo-textiles is used for road construction. This accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the total requirement, he said. Most of the material used for road construction is made of man-made fibre, which does not disintegrate into the soil. On the contrary, natural fibres such as coir are biodegradable, making it ideal for soil erosion-control and other bio-engineering applications.
