VIJAYAWADA: A cycle rally was organised by the Active Bicyclers Association (ABA) to mark World Environment Day here on Saturday. Students of the Gandhi Municipal High School and NCC cadets took out the rally from Swaraj Maidan along Mahatma Gandhi Road, Tikkle Road, Busroute No. 5 Road, Gopala Reddy Road and culminated in the Police Control Room circle. The ABA founder and general secretary V.Satyanarayana said the idea behind involving students of different institutions was to promote awareness about the impact of pollution on the environment. Using a bicycle for transport was good for the health of the user and for the environment, he said. Urging managements of various institutions to encourage the use of cycles to improve the health of the students and reduce pollution, Mr Satyanarayana said that every institution should make it mandatory to shun the use of vehicles that run on fossil fuels at least on one day in a week. He asked parents not to give students motorised vehicles until they were old enough to get a licence. He said educational institutions should give importance to education students about the dangers of using vehicle while they were under age. He said people in the developed countries were making use of the bicycle more because of the benefits.
