Proud moment:Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik presenting award to Monalisa Jena at a function organised by the Orissa Sahitya Akademi in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik presented the annual literary awards of Odisha Sahitya Akademi for the years 2007 and 2008 at a special ceremony at Rabindra Mandap here on Saturday. Eighteen writers were conferred the awards in nine categories. Each of the awards carried a citation and a cash of Rs.25, 000. The awardees for 2007 were Manoj Kumar Mohapatra (novel), Bishnu Sahu (short story), Aparna Mohanty (poetry), Rama Chandra Mishra (drama and one act play), Rabindra Prasad Panda (essay and criticism), Rabi Tripathy (biography and travelogue), Monalisa Jena (translation), Ramesh Patri (children's literature), and Alekh Chandra Padhiary (lyrics). Similarly, the awardees for 2008 included Bhima Prusty (novel), Prakash Mohapatra (short story), Sunil Kumar Prusty (poetry), Prasanna Das (drama and one act play), Gouranga Charan Dash (essay and criticism), Manoranjan Pradhan (biography and travelogue), Asit Mohanty (translation), Manas Ranjan Samal (children's literature), and Brundaban Jena (lyrics). Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stressed the need for popularising Oriya literature through translation. Culture Minister Prafulla Samal and Commissioner of Culture A.K.Tripathy said an international convention of the Odiyas would be hosted in the capital this year. Akademi president and eminent writer Rama Chandra Behera, who chaired the ceremony, said the akdemi would reprint some of the important books that it published and are out of print now. Akademi vice-president Giri Dandasena and secretary Bijay Kumar Nayak were also present.
