Asks why admission procedure should not be cancelled Says managements violated MCI regulations KOCHI: The Admission Supervisory Committee for Professional Colleges, on Saturday, issued notice to four medical colleges affiliated to the Kerala Christian Professional College Managements Federation asking them to explain why the admission procedure to the postgraduate medical seats for 2011-12 should not be cancelled within two days. The committee, headed by the former Kerala High Court judge P.A. Mohammed, took the decision based on its finding that the admission procedure adopted by the managements was not fair and lacked transparency. MCI regulations A sitting of the committee held here also found that the managements had violated the regulations of the Medical Council of India (MCI) by admitting students on their own to the 100 per cent seats. The managements had filled the seats stating that the government had not initiated any step to fill the seats under the government quota within the May 31 deadline set for admission to the postgraduate seats. Deadline Denying the stance of the managements, the committee said the Supreme Court had earlier extended the admission deadline to June 30. It pointed out that the managements should have earmarked 50 per cent seats as government quota, as per the MCI regulations. The admission procedure implemented by the managements was in violation of clause no. 9 of the MCI regulations regarding admission to the postgraduate seats in medical colleges, the committee said. Prospectus The committee found that the prospectus for admission submitted by the managements was also not fair and transparent. It had learnt that the managements had collected exorbitant fee while filling the postgraduate medical seats. The committee said the Fee Regulatory Committee for Professional Colleges was yet to ratify the fee structure proposed by the managements. It could be ascertained only after studying the fee collected by medical colleges in other States, the committee members said. Commercialisation The committee said the decision taken by the managements to fill the postgraduate medical seats on their own would lead to commercialisation of the professional education sector in the State.
