Government committed to welfare of minorities: Minister

Rs. 50 crore earmarked fort the development of Christians

Mysore: The B.S. Yeddyurappa Government was committed to the comprehensive development of the minority community in the State by unveiling various programmes, Minister for Haj, Wakf and Minority Welfare, Mumtaz Ali Khan, said on Saturday.

The Government had set apart Rs. 376 crore in the previous budget to provide education, assistance to widows, and other programmes, he told presspersons in Madikeri, an official release said.

Haj Bhavan

A sum of Rs. 40 crore was being spent for the construction of Haj Bhavan in Bangalore. The Government had granted Rs. 18 crore and the rest would be mobilised through donations , Mr. Khan said. More focus was given on the education of women among the minority community, he added.

The State government had earmarked Rs. 50 crore for the development of the Christian community which would be utilised towards education, modernisation of churches, and financial assistance to the poor. The government had constituted an authority to ensure the welfare of women belonging to the minority community, the Minister added.

Financial assistance would be given if women suffered from illnesses and the scheme had come into effect from April 1. The Yeddyurappa Government had done its best to ensure camaraderie between all communities since it came to power three years ago. There was shortage of land for the construction of minority hostels in the State although funds were available, Mr. Khan said.

He had visited 29 districts in the State and his Kodagu visit was 30th in the State. Mr. Khan visited the minority hostel located on the college road in Madikeri and inspected the hostel and followed it up with a visit to another such hostel in Virajpet. In-charge Deputy Commissioner K.M. Chandre Gowda, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat N. Krishnappa, Backward Class and Minority Department officer Puttaraju, DDPI Ramaswamy and Muslim community leader Usman Haji were present.
