Samashti upanayanam

TIRUCHI: The 34 {+t} {+h} annual `Samashti Upanayanam' (mass upanayanam) organised by the Hindu Samaya Mandram at Srirangam here recently evoked good response as the Mandram had conducted 23 `upanayanam' for 23 boys from the economically weaker classes in the society.

According to R.Karthikeyan, one of the members of the Mandram, the mass upanayanam was started in a small way in 1976 had now become a regular annual feature of this noble cause.

He pointed out that the Mandram had organised and performed free upanayanam for 1,248 boys of economically lower-strata so far and also performed free marriages for 48 couples. Usual religious rituals starting from ‘Uthagasanthi' to ‘Paaligai' associated with the Upanayanam were also performed, he said.

After the upanayanam (wearing of the first holy thread) all the boys came in a procession through the four main streets in Srirangam and immersed the `Paaligai' in Coleroon river. Ganapathy homam and Sudharsana homam were also performed the next day.
