Now a generator powered by human waste
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: In a major breakthrough, Sulabh International claims to have devised a power generator that runs on gas generated from human excreta.
Developed by the NGO's founder head Bindeshwar Pathak, it has been connected to a public toilet complex run by Sulabh International and is generating electricity.
“In this technology, bio-gas is produced by anaerobic digestion of human excreta and is used for lighting purposes and even cooking. Bio-gas plant effluents are treated by a simple method to generate colourless, odourless, pathogen-free gas while the waste water generated from it is safe for re-use. Such bio-gas plants can be very successful in housing colonies, high-rise buildings and areas not served by sewers,” said Dr. Pathak.
Stating that the NGO has developed this technology -- Sulabh Bio-gas Plant Effluent Treatment -- after months of trials, Dr. Pathak said a generator of 3.5 KVA has been connected to a bio-gas digester at a Sulabh public toilet at Palam village in Delhi.
