“Act against encroachers”
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: Madurai Collector, U. Sagayam, has instructed the Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, to put the Mattuthavani Integrated bus stand in order devoid of encroachments, and provide basic amenities for passengers.
The Collector, who is also the Regional Transport Authority, said he would issue notice to the Corporation asking the officials to set things right according to the original plan of the bus stand where encroachment upon the public utility space has been rampant and was increasing unabated.
During the inspection on Saturday, a few shopkeepers complained to him about the encroachment on pathway by unauthorised shops that also eat into their earnings. Many shops were seen using cooking gas cylinders without mandatory licences.
The Collector found that those manning the ‘pay and use' toilets were taking excess charges from users.
While the contractors maintained that they were collecting Re.1 for those using the urinals, people coming out the toilets complained that they were forced to cough up Rs.3.
Besides, the Collector found that the maintenance of the toilets was “horrible.”
