SRINAGAR: Addressing a mediation orientation programme here on Saturday, Justice T. S. Thakur of the Supreme Court said being among the legal fraternity of the State brought back memories of old times of political stability in Jammu & Kashmir. Talking about the pre-militancy days when he used to practise in the J & K High Court, he remembered “times which were peaceful, with memories of the tallest leader in the State, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah”. Struggling to keep his emotions under control, Justice Thakur highlighted a list of innovative and notable steps the State had taken then. “Jammu & Kashmir was leading the country, whether in administrative reform, district development boards, single-line permits, abolition of subsidies or introducing political morality by having an anti-defection law,” he said. The judges and lawyers of the State were second to none anywhere in the country, he said. Though the State has been going through a tough phase, the process of rebuilding is in progress, “and it has to be done in the judiciary as well because only prompt delivery of justice will restore the faith of the people,” he said. Referring to Justice Thakur's observations, Justice Altamas Kabir of the Supreme Court said in his speech, “He may have been coming here from time to time but this is because of being together with you all (legal fraternity) after 18 years….” - PTI Tagging Instructions: 1.
