NHRC calls for report on Gopalganj incident
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken a serious view of the incident in the Gopalganj district jail in Bihar, where a doctor was killed by some inmates on May 29.
Bhudeo Singh was fatally assaulted because he refused to give false medical certificates which prevented prisoners from being shifted to the central jail in Buxar.
The Bihar Chief Secretary has been issued a notice and asked to reply within two weeks with details of the incident, besides explaining the steps being taken by the Government to ensure the safety of doctors on duty in jails. The NHRC was acting suo motu based on the media reports.
The reports alleged that Dr. Singh was assaulted by a group of inmates serving life term in a kidnapping for ransom case. As Dr. Singh entered their ward, they thrashed him till he fell unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, from where the doctors referred him to the Patna Medical College Hospital. He was declared brought dead.
