VIJAYAWADA: Indian postal service should face the competition from the private players head on and all the decisions should be customer-centric. Constant urge to offer quality service to the customer should be the primary motto for the very survival of the service in days to come, according to Postmaster General M. Sampath. Speaking at the regional excellence awards for 2011 function on Saturday, Mr. Sampath said that the postal department had lost its monopoly long back. “Competition has changed the face of the department. Now we are offering a wide range of services to the customers including selling of gold coins. We should change according to time,” he added. Highlighting the performance of the Vijayawada region, Mr. Sampath said that in business development activities, the region had achieved 93 per cent of the target amounting to Rs. 36 crores. “The commission achieved by the region in offering services like saving, fixed and recurring deposits to the customers is Rs. 105 core this year which is Rs.15 crore more than last year. In the Rural Postal Life Insurance segment, we were able to enrol 4, 60,000 policy holders this year. Last year we had enrolled 4, 20,000 policy holders. By April this year, we were able to give all the policy holders their pass books,” he explained. He said all the major post offices in the region were computerised and around 500 offices in the ‘B' and ‘C' categories were upgraded to offer quality service. “Speed post can be tracked by the help of Indiapost website. The position of the speed post can be had by the click of the mouse,” Mr. Sampath said. Mr. John Chrisostom, general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, said that a memorandum of undertaking (MoU) should be signed between BSNL and postal department to offer services jointly as they exist all over the country. “Even in rural areas we see a telephone exchange and a post office. It is time we joined hands to provide better services under one roof,” he felt. Mr. D.S.V.R. Murthy, Director of Postal Services along with Mr. Sampath and Mr Chrisostom gave away awards to 65 officials who excelled in the fields of postal life insurance, rural postal life insurance, business development and saving bank business. Guntur division got the first prize in the business development with 93 per cent followed by Machilipatnam and Vijayawada and in postal life insurance, Nellore, Vijayawada and Khammam finished at the top three positions.
