Thrissur: Rain fury continues to wreak havoc in the coastal areas of the district.

Lightning killed one person in Kodungalloor taluk. The deceased was identified as Salim, 40, son of Methala Vaippinkattil Sayid Mohammed.

The district administration has intensified relief works. All village offices in the district will function on Sunday to streamline the disaster management works.

The district collector allotted an amount of Rs. 5 lakh for the relief works in Chavakkad, which is the worst hit.

The money will be used to construct a temporary sea wall at Anchangadi at Kadappuram panchyat.

The collector said Rs. 35,000 would be given as emergency aid to those who lost their houses in the rain. The district so far received 329.8 mm rain. Standing crops in 20.03 ha were destroyed in Friday's rain. The total crop loss so far has been pegged at Rs. 1.03 crore.

More than 100 houses were damaged in various part of the district, causing a loss of Rs. 8.57 lakh. Many parts of the coastal belt were facing the threat of sea erosion. Many coconut trees were uprooted. Sea walls have been damaged in many places.

Most of the houses were damaged as waves swept across the beaches. Attempts to form a green wall with casuarinas did not yield results as the lashing tidal waves uprooted most of them.
