Creating awareness through theatre and song

CHENNAI: “What is the crime? Who is the criminal?” begins a soft chant in Tamil which soon engulfs the courtyard outside the British Council Library. One by one, students steps forward to declare they are the criminals“ Have you done anything for the environment?” Arun demands of his young colleague Suraj who plays the part of a successful businessman. The audience is taken on a flashback of Suraj's life where he learns about the ill-effects of using plastic. Using Illayaraja, MGR and RD Burman songs, Arun's Roots and Shoots' group effectively sang home the point of environmental protection at a programme organised at British Council here on Friday. “The point is not to tell people to avoid using plastic. The point is to bring upon a guilty conscience,” said 24-year-old Arun Krishnamurthy, an IIMC graduate, the brain behind the play.

The event also saw the screening of Arun's short film Kurma, which was awarded the Best Film, Best Concept and Direction at The International Sea Turtle Symposium in San Diego. British Council's Head of the Library and Cultural Centres V. Bhuvaneswari said, “This event was more about our social responsibility towards climate change and protection of the environment. ”
