Show of devotion: Idols being taken for the Celestial wedding at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Innambur near Kumbakonam on Saturday. THANJAVUR: The Thirukalyanam was held in a grand manner at Sri Devi Boomi Devi Samedha Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Innambur near Kumbakonam on Saturday. Hundreds of devotees witnessed the celestial wedding. "Varisam" was taken by people to the temple. Later Srinivasa Perumal and Sri Devi and Boomi Devi idols were taken in procession inside the temple. Exchange of garlands took place in the prahara. Accompanied by mellifluous nadaswaram and tavil, Bhattacharyas taking the garland from Perumal and Thayars danced and exchanged the garlands. After this ritual was repeater thrice, the couple was taken to the marriage stage. Unjal utsavam was held and later Thirumangalya Dharanam was conducted. Procession of the couple in flower palanquin and Garudasevai followed the wedding. Earlier, Thirumanjanam was done to the Lord. Srinivasa Sathsangam of Innambur organised the Thirukalyanam festival. The history of Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple dates back to the Vijayanagar dynasty. Veeravalli Krishnamacharya and his nephew Raghava Iyengar, ancestors of Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, Founder of The Hindu, who constructed this temple, installed the idol of Lord Venkateswara with His consorts at the temple. This idol is said to have originally belonged to the Vishnu shrine on the Thirumalai hills at Thirupathi. The idol of Lord Venkateswara was taken from Thirupathi to Navalpakkam near Kanchipuram for safe custody when the fear of Mughal invasion was haunting the minds of devotees at Thirupathi. Veeravalli Krishnamacharya secured this idol and installed at Innambur.
