Initiation:Children having a whale of a time at the sensory integration training unit at the Holy Cross Service Society in Tiruchi on Saturday TIRUCHI: A sensory integration training unit, established at a cost of about Rs.2.50 lakh, was declared open at the Holy Cross Service Society, a non-governmental organisation at Puthur in the city. The unit would help provide a structured individual-based training plan to meet the sensory integration needs of children who require such assistance, said S.Prabakar, Director, Holy Cross Service Society. Early stimulation and sensory integration are important factors that contribute to the successful learning process among children. Conditions such as speech and language delays, pervasive development disorder, cognitive delays, cerebral palsy, mild brain damage, multi-handicapped condition, hearing, visual and learning disabilities have a profound impact on sensory integration process. Sensory integration plays a vital role in learning and cognitive functioning. The facility would help assist children with problems in sensory integration process, he said. Holy Cross Service Society, which is assisting over a hundred children below six years of age with “speech and language delays,” would be able to offer structured training programmes. D.Senguttuvan, senior consultant paediatrician, Kavery Medical Centre and Hospital, inaugurated the unit that was designed and developed by Mila Brobbel and Inez Antoinette Boesten, students of Fontys University, the Netherlands.
