Chennai Silks to manufacture precast products

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore-based textile group Chennai Silks has ventured into the construction sector. It has commissioned a precast concrete product manufacturing factory, Teemage Precast, near Erode.

Managing Director of Teemage Precast N.K. Nandagopal told presspersons here on Saturday that the factory would manufacture hollow core slabs, wall panels, beams, columns, pre-stressed stair cases, boundary walls, and road barriers.

The factory was established at an investment of Rs. 100 crore on 16 acres at Kangeyam, near Erode. Teemage had collaborated with German and Belgium companies for technology and would manufacture about 6,000 sq.ft. of pre-cast concrete products a day. The target was to increase production to 18,000 sq.ft a day. The total annual production capacity of the unit could be scaled up to 40 lakh sq.ft. Teemage targeted construction projects mainly in Coimbatore, Erode, and Tirupur districts. The annual turnover expected in a year was Rs. 100 crore.

Mr. Nandagopal said the factory also had a computerised batching plant, in-house quality control laboratory, vehicles for transport, and experienced personnel.

Ganapathy, General Manager of Teemage, said the company would take up design, production, supply and installation. It planned to go in for ISO and IMS certification for its products. The construction industry would soon become fully-automated and precast slabs had tremendous potential. The company would manufacture it in different thickness for different spans.

P. Arun Prasad, Chief Architect Planner of Arun and Associates, said two major problems faced by the construction industry was shortage of labour and cost. Precast and pre-stressed products were a solution. Several companies were getting into this sector in the country.
