Voluntary organisations to form movement

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Members of about 30 organisations, who participated in a fast at Kaalavaasal here on Saturday, in support of Baba Ramdev's demands on black money, corruption, the Lokpal Bill, special courts, agriculture, education etc., resolved to form ‘Makkal Meetppu Iyakkam,' (People's Retrieval Movement) to “clean up Madurai.”

The new movement, according to S. Tamilarasan of Consumer Protection Movement, who led the fast, would be a federation of organisations interested in the well being of Madurai. The objective would be to prevent atrocities against the common people and “clean up” the ancient city. The members would take up with appropriate authorities issues that affected the common man.

The day-long fast was inaugurated by I. Mayandi Bharati, freedom fighter.

Speakers highlighted the need for the common man to fight corruption at all levels.
