‘I want to be a team player, not a referee'
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Speaker Nadendla Manohar has expressed his desire to work in the Assembly as a team player and not as a “referee”.
He indicated his mind when the Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu complimented him on his being elected Speaker, suggesting that he should work as a “referee” by treating members of the ruling and Opposition parties on an equal footing and by providing more opportunities to the Opposition as a whole.
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Mr Naidu and floor leaders of other parties conducted Mr. Manohar to the Chair and made speeches later, heaping praise on him. Replying to them, Mr. Manohar said he would prefer to be a team player and advised members to work with team spirit in highlighting and solving problems of people.
Cooperation sought
He said he would follow the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar and Rajiv Gandhi in conducting the proceedings of the House. He sought cooperation from the media in conveying the views of the members correctly to the people.
Mr Bhatti Vikramarka, who was also felicitated on his election as Deputy Speaker, replied that a rare opportunity was given to him to serve the people.
