‘IIM graduate had no plan to kill wife'

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: It was to escape the embarrassment of being branded unfit for family life which drove IIM graduate, G. Naga Niranjan, to get his wife, Anantha Laxmi, murdered, the Vanasthalipuram police said on Saturday.

Niranjan, whom the police arrested along with his parents and one of the three hired killers, told the police that he had problems in having normal sexual life. He initially wanted to divorce her.

But his relative, M. Srikanth, a suspended Andhra Pradesh Special Police constable, suggested to him that divorce without valid reason would be a blot on his personal life and defame him further, said Inspector B. Ravinder Reddy. “He told Niranjan that eliminating her would be the best option,” the police said.

The ex-constable and his associate yet to be identified are still at large. Niranjan, hailing from Guntur, was a mechanical engineer and joined MBA at IIM Pune for better career prospects. His marriage was performed with Laxmi, a distant relative and of the same district, seven months ago. She was pursuing degree in a college in city and residing in a private hostel at Vanasthalipuram.

Niranjan paid Rs.4 lakh to Srikanth to execute the murder. At his instance, Niranjan admitted Laxmi in a spoken English course. As per the plan, on May 21, Niranjan picked up his wife in a car -- in which the “killer trio” was already sitting -- from her hostel to drop at the institute. After reaching Panama crossroads, Niranjan got off the vehicle stating he would come in another vehicle.

Laxmi, who was sitting on the front seat, didn't suspect the intentions of Srikanth driving the car since the latter was her relative too. After passing Dindi in Mahabubnagar, Srikanth's two associates strangled her to death with the ‘chunni' she wore.

Later, they drove to Rangapur village on the outskirts of Achampet and dumped the body on the roadside where they bludgeoned her head with a boulder.
