No forcible relocation of Soligas from their habitats, says Union Minister

UN has organised events in India to create awareness on clean environment

BANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Saturday called upon chief executive officers of information technology companies to promote green technology.

He told presspersons here that he was sure that India, a leader in IT sector, would also lead the world in green technology.

What was needed was that all those concerned about the greenhouse effect should cooperate in developing and promoting the technology.

The UN has organised events only in New Delhi and Bangalore in the country to create awareness on the steps to be taken for creating clean environment.

On the relocation of Soligas from their habitats such as B.R. Hills, the Minister said there was no question of forcible eviction.

It was for them to accept the Union Government's scheme under which a family that moved out of its forest habitat would be paid Rs.10 lakh.

Jaitapur project

On the Jaitapur plant in Maharashtra, Mr. Ramesh said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given consent for the project and the condition was that it should be a clean project and should not cause harm to either human lives or the environment.

To a query why the State Government permitted the Bannari Amman Sugar Mills to set up a factory near the tiger sanctuary in B.R. Hills, the Minister said he had written to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa not to allow any factory or industry, or SEZ near sanctuaries such as Bhadra, Ranganathittu or B.R.Hills.
