Delhi edition of Dinamani launched

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi launched the Delhi edition of the Tamil daily Dinamani, from The New Indian Express group, Chennai, at a function here on Friday. This is the eighth edition of the popular newspaper.

Mr. Quraishi described the media as the Election Commission's ally and “eyes and ears.”

He recalled the EC's instructions wherein the officers had been told that during the polls, the news appearing in the media relating to poll code violation or corruption by candidates etc. could be taken as a formal complaint and follow-up action taken up by the officials themselves. They need not wait for formal orders from the EC in Delhi, he said.

‘Self-discipline'

Mr. Quraishi commended the great role played by civil society during the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly election in thwarting money power and stressed on the need for restoring the dignity of various institutions of governance in the country. He urged the media to have “self-discipline.”

Among others, Dinamani Editor K. Vaidyanathan, news editor (Delhi) Paa. Krishnan and Tamil litterateur Soloman Pappiah participated.
