Do not aspire for posts, Kiran tells party workers

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy counselled the Congress party workers not to aspire for posts and to be patient for the right opportunity to come their way. “You will be recognised eventually, but you need to be destined to get the post. I am a good example of it,” he exclaimed at a meeting organised in the old city on Sunday.

“The Congress has come to power in the State and the Centre because of the tireless efforts put in by party workers and not due to the leaders. Those who do not realise this will never win another election,” he said.

“If you clamour for posts it will go away otherwise it will come home,” he said.

Reminisces

Reminiscing, Mr. Reddy revealed that his father was a four-time MLA and he too was a four-term MLA but always “felt bad about not becoming a Minister!”

“I became the Chief Minister though I never became a Minister,” he said with a smile.

Former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao had wished him luck in 1989 stating that he was going to be Minister even before his colleagues D. Nagender and M. Mukesh Goud became MLAs, but it never happened. “Much later, thanks to the party and blessings of Sonia Gandhi I got the posts of Chief Whip, Speaker and now the Chief Minister,” he explained.

The Chief Minister promised to accommodate party workers in the nominated posts in various corporations soon, as the party does recognise the sacrifices made by the workers, especially where the ally (read MIM) was powerful.

He urged them to propagate the various welfare programmes of the Congress government like providing two crore citizens with Rs. 2 a kilo rice, ration cards, Aarogyasri, housing for poor, etc. or else “other parties stake claim for it.”

Mr. Reddy stated that starting from next week, he would be holding meetings in all 294 constituencies with local MLAs and party workers for the next six months.
