Stage set for Naveen Kalakar festival

Correspondent

It will feature nearly 180 young classical dancers and singers

BHUBANESWAR: The stage is set for the fifth edition of Naveen Kalakar, an annual festival for young artistes, at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (USM) auditorium here commencing on Friday. The four-day event is being hosted collectively by Devdasi Nrutya Mandir, USM and Samskritiki cultural society. Nearly 180 young Indian classical dancers and singers from across the country in the age group of 10 to 30 are participating in the festival this year, informed festival coordinator Jagabandhu Jena. There are even a few dancers from abroad, he added. The festival features seven Indian classical dance styles – Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam, Sattriya, Manipuri and Odissi – apart from Hindustani and Odissi music, both vocal and instrumental, he elaborated. The objective of the festival is to discover budding talents and highlight them as soloists, Jena explained. “A jury comprising dance exponents and dance critics shall watch the performances and those who would secure at least 70 per cent marks shall be conferred the title of Nrutya Jyoti. Similarly, there would be a separate jury for music and successful performers shall be conferred the titles of Sangeet Jyoti, he added. After Mumbai's six-decade-old Kal ke Kalakar annual dance and music festival for the young artistes, this is the second of its kind in India, he informed. For the past four years, the festival was confined to Odissi dancers and this year it opened its gates for all Indian classical dance and music styles, it was learnt.
