Panchayats asked to provide legal aid

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority has asked the State's Panchayati Raj Department to establish legal service clinics at the village panchayat offices to facilitate extension of legal aid to the rural populace.

At a meeting here over the weekend, Authority Executive Chairman Justice Dalip Singh Rathore asked for a review of the progress of legal service works. The availability of legal counselling at village panchayats would attract people in large numbers and encourage them to avail benefits.

Compensation

“We especially need the support of lawyers for schemes such as Lok Adalat and the Mega Lok Adalat and to provide legal aid. In instances of road accidents, the victims need to be compensated immediately, for which a fund may be created,” said Justice Rathore.

Justice Rathore, a sitting Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, said the State Government should join the Authority's efforts to publicise its schemes for the benefit of those in need.

Officials representing different departments attended the meeting. Among others, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) P. K. Dev, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) C. K. Mathew, High Court Registrar-General H. S. Saxena and Additional Advocate-General S. K. Sharma were also present.
