Eco activist plans to hold a photo expo on impact of pollution from Parawada to Bhimili

Earth matters:Arman, a seventh standard student, speaks at a meeting organised to mark World Environment Day in the city on Sunday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: This was a meeting which attracted people from the age of 12 to 70 years, though in small numbers, to express their resolve to continue fight against environmental degradation.

Speaking at the meeting organised by Movement for People-Centred Development here on Sunday on the occasion of World Environment Day, Praja Spandana president C.S. Rao said now the time had come to launch a big movement against pollution.

He said all should take an active part in it and the authorities concerned should implement the laws to award stringent punishment against those polluting the atmosphere in different forms.

Arman, a 12-year-old student and member of World Wide Children Nature Conservation Club, spoke on danger lurking due to climate change. He said the club was sensitising school students by involving children actively in the campaign to stop deforestation and promote greenery to protect the ecosystem.

Vamsi, another student-activist associated with Go Green Campaign, said they had decided to plant 10,000 saplings and educate people on planting trees and ensuring their upkeep. VIRASAM activist Chalasani Prasad said for past 30 years pollution due to industrialisation was on the rise in the city. Despite warning by civil society activists and studies confirming pollution reaching alarming level, no concrete action was being taken to keep it under control. He said he would take an active role in campaigns against environmental degradation.

APCLC activist Sriram Murthy said polluting industries have to own up responsibility for the problems faced by pollution victims.

Environmental activist J.V. Ratnam said they would campaign and hold an exhibition of photos on impact of pollution from Parawada to Bhimili. He said film being shot on industrial pollution in the city would be ready for release by month-end.
