HYDERABAD: The 17- day strike by village servants demanding higher pay was called off on Saturday evening after a meeting between State-level leaders of their association and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration Pankaj Dwivedi. The association president N. Peddanna and general secretary V. Ramulu told a press conference on Sunday that the 50,000 village servants across the State would resume duties on Sunday. They said the government had agreed to increase their honorarium from Rs. 2,500 to 3,000 a month and dearness allowance from Rs. 50 to 100. The association launched the strike on May 20 with a demand for a honorarium of Rs. 5,000 a month which the government declined. Promise They added that the government committed itself to consider the other demand for extending to village servants medical invalidation scheme, now in vogue to its regular staff. The government also promised to fill up 6,063 vacancies of village servants. Village servants are part-time government employees who liaison between government and public in villages. They get their pay from the treasury.
