Heat wave sweeps North; 48.2 in Barmer

New Delhi: Severe heat wave conditions gripped most parts of North India on Monday, with Barmer in Rajasthan recording a sizzling 48.2 degrees Celsius.

In the national Capital, people continued to brave a scorching sun with the mercury soaring to a maximum of 43.5, three notches above normal and up by more than a degree from Sunday's 42.2 degrees.

The Meteorological Department has forecast a sultry Tuesday with temperatures hovering between 43 and 30 degrees.

Intense heat wave descended upon Rajasthan, where Barmer recorded the highest temperature at 48.2, seven degrees above normal.

Normal life remained affected in other parts of the desert State with Bikaner sizzling at a maximum of 47.9 degrees, Dholpur at 47.7 and Jaisalmer at 47.5.

In the plains of Punjab and Haryana, gruelling heat was back at many places, with Hisar sizzling at 45, Rohtak at 43.7, Narnaul at 43 and Ambala at 39.2.

In Punjab, Amritsar braved a hot day at 42.2 degrees. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded near similar maximum temperatures of 41.4 and 41 respectively.

Chandigarh's maximum settled at 38.8 degrees. — PTI
