Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Vinodraj (24), a resident of Pacchanady drowned in Phalguni river near Moodshedde on Sunday, while trying to save two children who were caught in the current. His friend could not bear the shock of the death and hanged himself.

According to the police, Vinodraj and his friend Dinesh (30) of Vaidyanathanagar were sitting on the banks of the Phalguni river flowing across the vented dam in Moodshedde. Vinodraj saw two 15-year-old boys in a boat stuck in the middle of the Phalguni river seeking help. Vinodraj jumped into the water but drowned before reaching the boat. Another boat came to rescue to the two 15-year-old children.

It took several hours for the local divers and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel to fish out Vinodraj's body.

The police said Dinesh returned to his house in the evening and hanged himself from the roof of the bathroom.
