Bangalore: The Legislative Assembly on Monday passed two Bills increasing the salary of the Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers by two and a half times, and doubling the pay of Ministers of State and legislators. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's monthly salary has jumped from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 30,000, the pay of Cabinet rank Ministers' goes up from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000, and that of Ministers of State from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 16,000. Salaries of the Assembly Speaker and the Council Chairman too increased from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 30,000 and that of Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairman from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. The salaries of the Leader of the Opposition and Chief Whips have doubled from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. The salaries of MLAs and MLCs have increased from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. The House passed The Karnataka Ministers' and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2011, and The Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Second Amendment) Bill, 2011, to increase the salary of members of the two Houses. Besides salaries, house rent allowance, conveyance allowance and the rates of travelling allowance and dearness allowance have also been revised. The annual allowance of Rs. 75,000 being drawn by the Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers has now been doubled to Rs. 1.5 lakh. The annual allowance of Ministers of State has been increased from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 80,000. The travelling allowance has been increased from Rs. 12 per km to Rs. 20. There have been across-the-board increases in house rent allowance, garden and house maintenance allowance, conveyance allowance, tour allowance, cellphone allowance and a sizeable hike in travel allowance (Ministers, the Chairman and the Speaker, the Deputy Chairman and the Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and the Government Chief Whip and Opposition Chief Whip will receive an allowance of Rs. 2 lakh a year in two equal instalments for the purpose of travelling, either alone or with a companion. Earlier, the amount was Rs. 50,000.) There will be an approximate annual expenditure of Rs. 25.97 crore on the increased salaries and allowances.
