Officials accused of misusing MNREGS funds

Staff Correspondent

District administration urged to appoint

a committee to probe misappropriation

Protesters threaten to intensify agitation if

no action is initiated against the guilty

DAVANGERE: Residents of Punabagatta and surrounding villages in Harapanahalli taluk on Tuesday took out a rally and staged a dharna in Harapanahalli demanding stringent action against officials for allegedly misappropriating funds totalling Rs. 42 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MNREG) Scheme.

The agitators, under the banner of the Akhil Bharat Kisan Sabha and the Akhil Bharat Yuvajan Federation, raised slogans against Punabagatta, Arsikere and Chigateri gram panchayat officials for allegedly misappropriating the funds meant to be used for providing thousands of jobless agricultural labourers with an opportunity to earn their livelihood.

Hosalli Mallesh, who led the agitation, urged the district administration to appoint a committee to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds and initiate action against those found guilty.

He demanded that the MNREG Scheme be implemented effectively in Harapanahalli taluk.

He warned the district administration that the agitation would be intensified if it failed to initiate action against the officials involved in the misappropriation.

Gudihalli Halesh, Shivakumar, Chandra Naika, Mylarappa, Matihalli Basavaraj, Koti Bhimappa, and Malagi Anandappa were among the leaders who participated in the agitation.
