Mystery shrouds farmer's death

Karwar: A farmer died under mysterious circumstances at Katagarkoppa Kerehonda in Bhatkal taluk when the Forest Department officials allegedly destroyed the farm he had developed on the encroached land. The victim was identified as Irappa Jatta Naik (50) of Padushirali in Bengre Panchayat area.

According to local people, Irappa had grown banana, areca, and palm trees on the encroached land and was dependent on his farm for his livelihood. He had allegedly encroached 30 guntas of land on forest survey number 338. The Forest Department officials had allegedly targeted his farm four times in the past and had destroyed the plants grown on the land. But every time he re-cultivated the encroached land. On Monday evening, the Forest Department officials again attacked his farm and destroyed the plants. In the fracas, Irappa collapsed and died on the spot. It was not clear whether he was killed or died of a heart attack.

On Tuesday, angry villagers refused to allow the body to be cremated and and insisted ction must be taken against the Forest Department officials responsible for the death of the farmer. People blocked the vehicles shifting the body for more than three hours.

Deputy Commissioner B.N. Krishaiah and Superintendent of Police Ramesh visited the spot and assured the people that an inquiry would be ordered.
