Status quo to be maintained for two months MCI had set May 31 deadline for entrance KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday ordered that status quo be maintained for two months with respect to the decision taken by the Kerala Private Medical College Management Association to conduct an entrance examination for admission to the MBBS course in the 11 colleges under the association. Justice P.R. Ramachandra Menon issued the interim order while admitting a writ petition filed by P. Anima Nahana of Kozhikode. Counsel for the association undertook before the court that no entrance examination would be held unless otherwise permitted by the court. The court recorded the submission of counsel. The petitioner, who found her place on the rank list of the entrance test conducted by the State, pointed out that neither the association nor the Kerala Christian Professional College Managements' Federation had conducted its own entrance examination for admission to the course in their member colleges so far. The Medical Council of India (MCI) had fixed May 31 as the last date for conducting the entrance examinations and stipulated that results of such examinations should be published before June 15. As no entrance examination had been conducted within the deadline, the college managements were bound to admit students from the rank list prepared on the basis of the State entrance examination. In fact, the State government could take over the seats from the college and allot students to these seats from the rank list prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations in view of the failure to conduct a separate entrance test within the stipulated time. The petitioner sought to restrain the association from going ahead with the decision to conduct its own entrance examination and also a directive to the association and federation to admit candidates from the rank list prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations without affecting the inter se merit of the candidates.
