‘Overloading causes losses'

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Associations has said that rampant violation of rules on maximum load permissible in goods vehicles, allegedly encouraged by corrupt officials of the Transport Department, is leading to huge losses to the truck owners.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, federation president B. Channa Reddy alleged that officials of the Transport Department encourage overloading by taking a bribe of Rs. 15,000 per month per vehicle.

Mr. Reddy said freight rates were not being increased though the operational cost of goods carrying vehicles was increasing because of hike in rate of diesel, maintenance costs and road toll rates.

Vehicle owners were resorting to overloading to make up for the losses as a temporary measure, though it was hitting their business badly in the long run. “This is a vicious cycle that we need to get out of,” Mr. R eddy said.

“It is has proved a curse to the truck owners in the long run because 100 loads of cargo is being carried by 50 to 60 trucks, causing huge losses,” he said.
