Categorisation opposed

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: City committee of the SC Reservation Parirakshana Vedika has opposed categorisation of Dalit Christians and Muslims as Scheduled Castes. In a statement on Tuesday, the Vedika leaders said after facing misery in the form of untouchability for ages, the community was recognised as Scheduled Castes with an aim to pave the way for their social equality and development in other areas through reservations.

The leaders alleged that there were members of a section, who actually followed Hindu religion but ‘faked' as Dalit Christians to corner the benefits extended by the government at the cost of the genuine Dalit Christian community.

The Vedika leaders said as it is, Dalit Christians, categorised as BC (C), were entitled to two per cent reservation in the education and government employment sectors. This was in addition to the several other welfare schemes introduced for them.

Ruing what they termed ‘diversion of huge funds' meant for the genuine Dalit Christian community over several years now, they demanded that the community continue to be categorised as BC (C).
