VISAKHAPATNAM: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will shortly appoint a consultant to develop the National Waterway No. 4 stretching from Kakinada to Puducherry of which Buckingham Canal is a part. Talking to media persons at the Visakhapatnam container terminal here on Wednesday, chairperson of IWAI Bhupender Prasad said that the proposal was under the consideration of the Ministry of Finance. She said that the Kakinada-Puducherry stretch of canals was declared National Waterway No. 4 midway through the 11 {+t} {+h} Plan in 2008, but no funds were allocated in the plan. The Planning Commission had suggested roping in the private sector and viability gap funding for taking up the works. This involved revival of the Buckingham Canal which was in disuse for long by dredging it at many places and clearance of above sectors. The Godavari and Krishna canals in Andhra Pradesh formed part of the project. “We have invited expression of interest (EOI) for the project work and we are also working with the Union Ministry of Finance to appoint a consultant for the project. The preparatory work is being done,” she said. Member of IWAI R.P. Khare said the cost of the 1,077 km. project, according to 2010 rates, was Rs.1,515 cr. Chief Operating Officer of Visakha Container Terminal Limited Capt. Sriram Ravichander also spoke.
